Meatballs with onions in the oven, an old traditional recipe
Ingredients
For the meatballs
- 500 gr ground beef
- 500 gr ground pork
- 1 large onion
- 1 egg
- 3 slices of stale bread
- 3 Tbsp olive oil
- ½ cup parsley finely chopped
- ½ cup spearmint finely chopped
- 2 Tbsp dried oregano
- Salt and pepper
For the onions
- 5 onions
- ½ cup olive oil
- ½ cup wine
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 tsp sugar
- Salt and pepper
Preparation
For the meatballs
Pour water over the bread in a bowl to moisten and let it soak. Chop the onion in a food processor. Combine the meats in a large bowl. Drain the bread and squeeze with your fingers to press out excess moisture. Add it to the mixing bowl along with the onion, oil and egg.
Chop parsley and spearmint. Add it to the mixture. Add salt, pepper and oregano. Mix until well incorporated. Put the mixture in the fridge.
For the onions
Cut the onions into thick slices.
In a large skillet heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add onions and toss to coat with oil. Season with salt and pepper. Cook onions, stirring occasionally for five minutes. Add the wine and let it cook for another five minutes until alcohol evaporates.
Add the tomato sauce and sugar. Mix well and pour over ½ glass of water. As soon as the water starts to boil, remove the skillet from the heat.
Pour the onion mixture into a baking pan. Take the bowl out of the fridge and shape the mixture into nice looking meatballs. Place them on the onions and bake the meatballs in a preheated oven at 200℃ until well browned on both sides.
Enjoy!
